New Year DIY resolutions

Firstly, all of us at DIY Together would like to wish all our readers and members a very Happy New Year!

Secondly, we’d like to remind you that today is the day to remove your Christmas decorations – according to tradition anyway. Some people like to leave the colourful lights up for another couple weeks in order to brighten up their evenings. As long as your lights are not obviously Christmassy, this should be fine. Alternatively just add a few shiny or metallic objects to your interior and light a few candles to create a cosy mood in dull evenings.

Whilst you’re detoxing or recovering from your over indulgence, start thinking about whether you need or would like to change or improve anything in your home. Start making a list and collecting ideas from magazines and brochures. Put these into a folder or a scrapbook over the following weeks. Remember, first just dream up some ideas – and imagine various solutions, easy makeovers and so on. If you want to save a lot of money, there are many things you can make and do yourself.  For example, decorating is relatively easy, fitting a new kitchen, making some storage units, fixing shelves, repairing floors, building decking etc are all ideal DIY jobs. If you’re not experienced enough, just get a couple of good books, and you can teach yourself the basic jobs & methods. However, skilled jobs such as plumbing & electrical work should be carried out by certified tradesmen. Woodwork and joinery are for experienced DIYers, but you can always start learning and practicing by making simple stools or storage boxes.

Other things such as making soft furnishings are also ideal DIY jobs. Start looking around for fabrics and textiles.  You might even find some great bargains in the Sales. Play with ideas – this year’s trend is about layering different patterns and textures, so be creative and eclectic. Always take some samples home, and try them against your furniture, space and light.

Good Luck and have lots of fun with many DIY projects during 2007! Do come back to our blog or DIY Network to discuss decorating or home improvement ideas, or just browse through our pages for tips and solutions.
