Natural Rugs

Natural Rugs

Sisal, seagrass, jute & bamboo rugs have been popular with the ecologically minded for some time, whilst wool rugs have been made for thousands of years to warm and soften up interiors.

Most natural rugs go with almost all interior design styles, adding texture and a touch of nature to a space. Most of these natural fibres & materials are strong & durable and ideal for domestic use. But, of course, there are far too many different types & styles – so which natural rug should you choose?
The following guide will hopefully help you to make the right decision.

Sisal Rug

Sisal was first used in rope-making, so it’s extremely strong and hardwearing.  It’s also versatile and can be woven into a wide range of patterns & styles. It can be a bit rough under bare feet, unless you get one that is mixed with wool.

Where to use it?

Ideal in living rooms, stairways, and heavy trafficked areas

Don’t use it in bathrooms and kitchens

Jute Rug

Jute is a finer natural fibre than sisal. For this reason it’s less durable than sisal, but its silky finish adds a touch of luxury to an interior. Given its versatility it can be woven into many patterns – one of the most popular is the herringbone weave. It also feels soft under feet.

Where to use it?

Ideal for bedrooms and other less used areas

Not suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. Although they make runners for stairways from jute, I’d recommend you only get one mixed with wool.

Seagrass rug

Seagrass is one of the strongest of the natural fibres. As its name implies it’s a grass which is covered in water during some part of the growing season. This makes it stain-resistant and moisture-proof so it can be used in areas exposed to water, food etc. It has a waxy texture which resists dirt and feels nice under bare feet. It can be weaved into patterns, such as herringbone or basketweave, but the original weave looks the most natural finish.

Where to use it?

Suitable for most areas of the home.
