Modern Rug

Modern Rug

Modern Rugs have come a long way. There was a time when most area rugs were either traditional looking (Persian or oriental) or ethnic (Mexican, Mediterranean etc) – and it was almost impossible to get a contemporary rug for a modern space. Then, the 60’s & 70’s changed everything – we had the shag rug, the oval braided rug and those large prints of flowers, geometrical shapes and animal prints! Rugs went wild!

The choice is now endless when it comes to finding a rug to complement the modern interior – in fact it can be almost daunting. So clear your mind – and get your approach right. Either choose a rug to complement your room – or choose the furnishing, color-scheme etc based on the details of your chosen rug.

1 – you need a modern area rug to complement existing furniture

If you have existing furniture and textiles – make sure that you choose a rug that goes with them. If you’re not sure, just get a rug with neutral colors – stone, caramel, coffee sort of shades. If you have a patterned couch, curtains or cushion – only add a simple, natural looking rug.

Natural Rugs

Sisal, seagrass and jute rugs can also complement the look, particularly if you want to add a touch of Japanese or a minimalist style.

Shag Rugs

Of course you should also consider the modern shag rug – there are now many different materials to choose from, so if you’re allergic to wool or want something easily cleanable, choose cotton or synthetic shag rugs. The really trendy shag rugs are made of leather (or faux fur).

2 – you need a modern rug to make a statement

The alternative approach to the modern rug is to choose an abstract rug or one with bold patterns – and furnish your room based on the pattern or style. Make sure that the colors of your space relate to the rug – choose maximum 3 colors to work with.

Braided Rugs

The braided rug is an excellent choice  to create a modern feel – and very affordable. Choose an oval or round shape with bold colors – then accessorize your soft furnishing (vases, cushions, etc) with the same colors your rug has. You can get acrylic, nylon or wool braided rugs – some of these are very durable, very affordable ( ideal for messy kids, dining rooms and bathrooms etc):
