Bedroom Feng Shui
The bedroom is the most private place of the home – and the place we spend up to third of our lives. Yet it’s the most neglected area of our home – we sometimes use it as a storage room, or as an office, and often it’s the last place we decorate..
According to Feng Shui principles, the bedroom is one of the most important spaces of the home. Some books advise you to have your bedroom in the back of the house, or that your bed should face north. In fact the location of your bedroom depends on your house’s triagram and the direction should sleep towards is determined by your personal triagram. Triagrams are to do with your birth year – and the year your house was built.
Basically, before you start rearranging furniture and decorate your bedroom with crystals and other things, you need to find out when your house was built – and therefore which period it belongs to. Then you can analyse your house with the flying star system and locate the bedroom. This is much easier to do than it sounds – if you have a good book or a site – it’s really not that difficult. You then have to decide where you put your bed. To have a restful night, your head should point towards your 4th best direction. Then you must consider any door and window alignment. These are the general rules:
- your feet should not face the doorÂ
- your bed should not be placed along the same wall as the doorÂ
- your bed should not be under a windowÂ
- your bed should not be positioned between a door & windowÂ
- your bed should not be placed at an angleÂ
- you should not sleep under any ceiling beams
Also, the bed should be accessible from both sides and you should not store things under it. The air should circulate freely around you. Your bed should be against a wall and have a headboard. Your bed should be made of wood rather than metal – metal can conduct electromagnetic stress. If you have cabinets or shelves, or beams above your head, that part of your body will be weaker.
As to the rest of the room, it really should be a place of relaxation – the sanctuary of the soul. So avoid clutter and strong colours. The door should open into the room and not be used as a hanging place. Don’t have mirrors facing the bed – it will draw energy away from you and will disturb your night.
What colours to use is again determined by your & your house’s triagram but generally speaking light shades of warm colors should be applied. Despite its popularity, red should be avoided because it provokes the mind rather than relaxing it.
Even if you’re sceptical about the principles of Feng Shui, your bedroom should be a place to which you escape from the hassles of life – so don’t have objects there reminding you of them. I know many people say, “you just sleep there, so why bother too much about it?†– but remember that during your sleep your mind is at work, your organs recharging and your cells regenerating. Also, it’s the place for your dreams – so why wake up to a nightmare???
