For the last couple of years two approaches have been dominating bathroom design & decoration – the modern and the natural.
The modern bathroom is about high-tech gadgets and finishes. This look is defined by walk-in showers with frameless glass panels or a wet-room; wall-mounted taps; wall-mounted TV; mood-lighting systems; steam enclosures; chrome, glass and ceramic finishes and so on. However, lots of people now find this look very cold and clinical and choose another style when they remodel their bathroom..
 Â
The natural look is less edged and more curvy. It uses organic shapes and natural materials, such as stone & wood. The organic shapes are combined with minimalist wall-mounted floating shelves or cabinets and wall-mounted taps. Textures and finishes are natural, matt or rough – such as concrete, textured plaster, exotic wood, slate or other stones. The color scheme is based on a neutral and earthy palette. This style is very suitable for a modern yet relaxed bathroom or a space where you want to experience tranquillity and serenity.
 Â
The latest bathroom trend is about opulence and luxury. More and more people visit spas and want to recreate that feeling of indulgence in their homes. Also, there is new trend in the world of interior design – called the “new old” or “new-stalgia” – which combines traditional shapes with modern materials. This “modern antique” look has also entered bathroom design.
Look at this picture of Jaime Hayon’s vanity basin. It looks an antique piece of furniture, yet its highly lacquered finish makes it look fresh and contemporary:
If you are a trend-setter or like the feel of elegance and glamour – this style is ideal for your bathroom. To achieve the look, choose dark, moody colors such as chocolate, charcoal, purple, plum or olive-green for your walls. Materials and textures should be glossy or at least pearly – so go for shiny, metallic and lacquered finishes. Tiles with traditional patterns (looking like a wallpaper) can add elegance whilst large mirrors add the feeling of glamour. Lighting should be subdued: use dimmers, low-level or hidden lighting or simply add some candles. Don’t forget that if your bathroom has no windows, you’ll need some directional lighting for shaving or make-up above the vanity basin.

It seems that the natural & nostalgic interior design styles will dominate this and the next decade. They both react on a sensual level to the harshness of the super-modern bathrooms. If you’re planning to remodel your bathroom, think about which style would best suit your home, your life, and your budget.
